New Construction Healthcare Facility
The Blackberry Center
Project Brief
The Blackberry Center is a 64-bed psychiatric hospital, reviewed and approved by Agency For Health Care Administration (AHCA), licensed by the Florida Department of Health, and accredited by The Joint Commission.
The basic design required four 16-bed units with requisite consultation rooms, social rooms, seclusion rooms, and support facilities. Restricted access and egress for patient areas were maintained in the design with no less than two controlled doors in series. Staff access is kept separate from patient access.
The design of the hospital required a primary focus on suicide prevention. Plumbing fixtures, door hardware, ceilings, and lighting were all carefully selected as anti-ligature project components. The design is careful to provide full accommodation of accessibility requirements with staff accessibility to and from work areas and accessible accommodations for disabled patients in specially designed en suite rooms with accessible showers, water closets, and lavatories. Accessible 34” countertops are employed throughout the facility in both patient and nonpatient areas and accessible routing in site access and parking.
